I’m here with another review, this time for the Braun Series 9 foil shavers. Now, I received this last week, and I said I was going to use them for a week and then do a review. So, here I am, one week later, been using these, no other foil shavers exclusively and I’ll tell you what I think about them. Companies that don’t do traditional hair products and barber products like Dyson are starting to lead the market with things like hair dryers. Will a product that doesn’t come from a traditional barbering company, like Andis or Wahl, be as good as that?

Comparing It With Andis and Whal

So, I’ve got in front of me the Braun Series 9 foil shavers, which retail at $339.99 on Braun’s website, and use them in comparison against things like the Andis foil shavers and the Wahl 5-star foil shavers. Right off the bat, $339 sank into these shavers, and they didn’t come with an adapter, they just had the two-pronged powerpoint. This meant that I had to go out and spend another couple of bucks getting an adapter for them. Secondly, they recommend that because these can be cleaned under the tap, that you should be oiling them once a week, but they don’t provide you with any oil either, as things like oil and adapters are pretty standard fare when it comes to getting any set clippers or trimmers You would think that is included, but it’s not.

On the plus side, they do say that you only need to change the foil every 18 months, which is a lot longer than my friend asks me – who recommend that you change the foil on their trimmers every six months. However, I don’t know if Braun is taking into account professional use and are just thinking about domestic, so that’s something that could be different. As for the foils themselves, they are fine, they are not bad foils at all. There’s a lot of plus points to them. The swivel head on them is a nice little thing for when you’re going around. Necklines are even coming up under there, you don’t have to do too much movement otherwise. The handle on them is a nice little change as well. It feels more ergonomic, I guess you’d say. They don’t vibrate as much in hand as well as other foils. I think this is mainly because you’ve got that separation in there, you’re not holding on to that point. You’ve got a little bit of distance from it, so there’s less vibrating when you’re using them.

And because of the swivel, I found when I was doing something like a skin fade, going between zero to the skin, that was slightly more helpful when trying to blur away that pesky zero line you get. They come with a wet and dry function. Now, I tried this on both wet and dry skin using things like shave gels as well, and I honestly found no difference. I really didn’t, in fact, you’d probably say I found it more productive using it dry than on wet, so it almost makes the wet function irrelevant.

As well as having two foil blades, there’s a lifting cut blade, a direct cut blade, and a protective guard, all in there. This sounds fantastic but you’d be really hard pushed actually to notice that when you’re using them. I didn’t find that there was any less irritation or any more irritation than when I use the hypoallergenic foils, on say, the Wahl five-star shavers. Also with Andis foils, you do have the raised foil so that you can just use one instead of two. Now, when they swivel you can only use one, say if you’re going over the top of the ear, that one stays out of the way but then it also kind of makes these three, irrelevant again. And maybe this is just me but when I use foil shavers or any other type of trimmers I’m used to, the button being where my thumb is when I hold them, the switch is not here where you hold them. It’s on the other side, which sounds like it’s good and it will be out of the way. You won’t turn them off, but when you’re used continuously to pressing the button, you actually activate the trimmers that are on these as well, so depending on what you’re doing that could be a nasty little accident for your haircut waiting to happen.

Now, you could also say that because they’ve got a set of trimmers built into them, that this makes a two-in-one purchase, and that there is something that makes life easier for you. You could save yourself the hassle of having two separate products. But having two different products isn’t really that much of a hassle and that you don’t really take up anymore or less room by having the foils and the trimmers being separate. And also with the cost of these two combined they’re still not even half the price of the Braun S9 trimmers.

So, overall they’re okay, they really are exceptional. They are foils that work well, you’ll be able to use them properly. To me, there’s no need to spend this much money on a set trimmer, when I already have perfectly good trimmers from other companies that cost less money. If you really want to spend that much money on high-end products, go for it, knock yourself out, but I honestly don’t think the difference to your work is going to be noticeable. So thanks very much for reading!
