Window bird feeders are simply that – little objects that you install on your window and put some food so the birds can come and enjoy their treats. You have probably noticed that people who live in houses install full-sized window feeders in their yards. Well, the bird feeder attached to the window is a smaller variation of it.
Most of those models are window bird feeders with suction cups, so it is really simple to put food and attach them to the window. And they are an excellent way to observe different types of birds up close. These bird feeders are also an excellent way to introduce bird feeding to kids, which is not only fun, but very relaxing and educational for them.

Editor-in-Chief of the Home Maker GuideTL;DR? Okay, we don’t want to spare your time, so here is our opinion: the best bird feeder is the next one:
Why do we think so? Let’s dig it up!
Now, some may wonder – what is the point of having a bird feeder for the window? There are actually plenty of benefits to it. For instance:
One of the reasons people can be hesitant about buying a clear window bird feeder is fear that the bird will hit the window and get hurt. In reality, though, you don’t have to worry about that. The thing is that there is a greater risk that a bird flies directly into a clear window alone. Daniel Klem Jr., a known ornithologist, says:
While creating our window bird feeder reviews, we’ve discovered that there are two types of them:
The stick-on window bird feeder models are generally smaller than the windowsill option, and they usually fit in any window. They are suction cup bird feeder models. These models are the most popular among bird observers. Some people also wonder about the longevity of these models. We think it’s safe to say that the suction cups would hold the feeder forever if you install everything properly. They are from durable and clear plastic and are very strong.
When it comes to windowsill models, there are two variations.
Some protrude through an open window inside the house, while others remain outside on the closed window.
Besides the regular models, there is also a hummingbird feeder. This one is a bit different because it has a special part for flower nectar which is the favorite food of these little feathery animals.
Even if you live in a dry area, there is always a chance of rain. And since window bird feeders are outside, the water may get in and make all the food wet and inedible. That is why it’s always a better idea to look for a window bird feeder with a good drainage system. Or as an alternative, you can install it yourself.
Whether you are buying acrylic window bird feeders or some other models, you have to pay attention to the quality of suction cups. After all, these are what keep the bird feeder on the window. Thus, if the suction cup is not good, it won’t hold the feeder.
The feeding tray, or more precisely its size, is quite important. And it really depends on you and your intentions. If you want to feed a lot of birds and have a lot of space – you can choose a bigger feeding tray. But do keep in mind that some birds can be quite scared or reluctant to eat if there are plenty of birds crowding, so don’t rush to get the biggest feeding tray there is.
You may be wondering why this is important. Okay, of course, the first important thing about installing bird feeders is that you make sure that it’s functional and stays on. But one of the reasons why it is so good to feed birds lies in the ability to see them. Hence make sure that you buy a see-through bird feeder.
Believe it or not, birds come to feeders they find attractive. What makes it attractive, you might ask? Colors! These feathered creatures love bright colors – red, yellow, purple, green. So if your window bird feeder is colorful or it has bright decorations – that’s a big plus.
Other than that, birds are attracted to certain types of food. So consider which birds you would love to attract, and place the food they love. For instance if you would love to see some jays – you can put in some peanuts or raisins.
Squirrels love to enter bird feeders and eat or steal the food. Thus, it’s always important to look for a squirrel-proof window bird feeder. Moreover, these critters might often chew on the feeder, and run it. To prevent it, it’s best to look for a feeder that has a metal feeding port.
One way to prevent squirrels from reaching the feeder is to place it higher. It should also be far from any structure from which they can jump from, such as a tree. Other than that, attaching a squirrel baffle will also help when you want to prevent them from entering the feeder. Windowsill feeders, however, don’t provide that kind of protection.
It is also better to look for a window bird feeder inaccessible for cats. Because as we mentioned, the feeders are quite engaging for your pets, but cats are still natural predators, and will attempt to hunt your feathered visitors. Plus, it will keep your cats safe too, since some birds carry diseases that could be dangerous for your cats (for instance, some song-birds may carry Salmonella).
Generally, there are no rules here. You can set up a bird feeder whenever you want. If you opt for windowsill models, it is best to install them in spring or summer because the window needs to stay open.
With food, of course. Some have preferences for colors or the size of the tray, though. But mainly, it is the type of food that will make a bird think about whether or not to come.
Wild Bird | Preferred Food | Readily Eaten |
---|---|---|
Pigeons, doves | Millet | Sunflower, millo, nuts, bread, cracked corn |
Roadrunners | Meat | Suet |
Hummingbird | Nectar, small insects | Sugar water, commercial nectars |
Cardinal | Safflower | Sunflower seeds |
Mockingbird | Fruit | Sunflower seeds |
Sparrow | Thistle | Millet |
Birds love comfort, and winter is the most difficult season for them, as it’s cold and there’s not enough food. Thus, when you want your feeder to be attractive to these feathered creatures, in addition to food you can install a heating bird bath fountain so they can get warm when they come to eat.
Also keep in mind that birds need food with more fat and protein to get by during cold months. Thus, give them something a bit more caloric: peanuts, sunflower seeds, suet, nyjer seeds, millet, etc. You can even give them a bit of peanut butter.
We have to say that there isn’t a rule on the size. It all comes down to how many birds you plan to feed regularly, as well as what type of birds you would love to attract most. For instance if you want to attract bigger birds, like crows and magpies, then you will need a bigger window bird feeder. Overall, while making our window bird feeder reviews we’ve determined that generally, it’s better to choose a medium, or larger model.
The only way you can know if the feeder fits your windows is to take its dimensions. In general, suction cup feeders are small and fit with all windows. And windowsill feeders are compatible with some sizes but not all. You also have to make sure that you can easily access the feeder to fill and clean it.
The essential thing is to place it in an area that is attractive to birds. You also have to make sure that it is visible for your room. Lastly, the feeder needs to be easily accessible for you, and away from places where your pets or squirrels can reach it.
It all depends on the size and type of the feeder. If it is a larger feeder, you will need large cups. The feeder always needs to be in the center of the window. Generally, you should put it either very close to the window (not more than three feet away) or much further (more than ten feet away).
There are plenty of reasons why birds don’t come to your feeder. But you can try to keep the feeder perfectly clean and attractive. Apart from that, you can replace the seeds with another type that you know is tastier for the bird you want to attract. Keep in mind that birds will eat different types of food depending on the season.
And that’s all we wanted to share about the window bird feeders with you! As you see, bird feeding and observing is a pretty amazing activity that allows you to relax and connect more with nature. Thus, it would be an amazing gift for anyone that loves animals. Other than that, you’re doing a good deed by feeding the little guys, especially during winter when they can’t find a lot of food.
With that said, we sincerely hope that our little research helped you learn more about how to choose only the best window bird feeder 2021!
